초록

This study focuses on the phenomenon where the representative Korean thought verb 'saenggakhada' is translated into various Japanese counterparts, such as 'omou' and 'kangaeru'. While existing research has predominantly concentrated on the semantic differences between these Japanese verbs, few studies have quantitatively analyzed the influence of the syntactic structure (i.e., sentence patterns) of the Korean sentence on the selection of the corresponding Japanese verb. To address this gap, this study extracted 1,002 sentence pairs containing 'saenggakhada' from the HUFS-KJBPC, a large-scale Korean-Japanese parallel corpus. The relationship between Korean sentence patterns and their Japanese verb counterparts was then examined using statistical methodologies, including the chi-squared test, standardized residual analysis, and log-odds ratio analysis. The analysis revealed a statistically significant correlation between Korean sentence patterns and the choice of Japanese counterparts (χ² = 689.45, p < 0.001). Specifically, the 'S-dago' pattern, which indicates subjective judgment, showed a strong association with 'omou', whereas the 'NP-reul' pattern, used for logical deliberation, was strongly associated with 'kangaeru'. Furthermore, the log-odds ratio analysis indicated that the odds of 'omou' being selected for the 'S-dago' pattern were over 17 times higher than for the 'NP-reul' pattern, confirming that this association is far more than a mere tendency. These results demonstrate that the selection of a Japanese counterpart for the Korean 'saenggakhada' is not determined solely by semantic similarity but is significantly constrained by the syntactic structure of the source Korean sentence. This study intends to expand upon this methodology in future research, conducting a bidirectional analysis from Japanese ('omou'/'kangaeru') to their Korean counterparts, to further explore the thought verbs of both languages in greater depth.
