Abstract

This study examines the translation of the Korean lexical item “saenggak” in two contexts: a Korean–Japanese parallel corpus and the machine translation system Papago. The findings reveal that the Japanese translations provided by both sources tend to be more diverse and semantically differentiated than the Korean original. The parallel corpus renders “saenggak” using seven distinct expressions while Papago uses six. Although the numerical difference is minimal, Papago's translation behavior appears to exhibit a degree of idempotence. Papago frequently simplifies the term into “omou” or “kangaeru,” contrasting with the parallel corpus, which often includes cases of omission or free translation. Moreover, expressions rendered as “omou” in the corpus are often translated as “kangaeru” by Papago. These differences suggest that Papago may struggle to capture nuanced contextual meaning and speaker intent, instead favoring more literal translations.
