초록

This study presents a corpus-linguistic analysis of usage patterns of Japanese body-part idioms using the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese (BCCWJ). Sixteen idioms containing five body parts—頭 (head), 顔 (face), 目 (eye), 胸 (chest), and 腹 (stomach)—were selected as research targets. Unlike conventional semantic-based classifications, this study applied a postposition-based classification method following 미the structure of ‘body part + postposition + predicate.’ Quantitative analysis of 3,163 instances extracted from the BCCWJ, classified into ‘idiomatic expressions’ and ‘literal expressions,’ revealed that 6 out of 16 idioms (40%) were used idiomatically 100% of the time, while 66.7% of expressions showed idiomatic usage rates exceeding 90%. This suggests a considerably high degree of idiomatization among body-part idioms. Genre distribution analysis showed high usage rates in book-related genres (図書籍 39.9%, 出書籍 27.4%), totaling 67.3%. Notably, idioms containing the postposition が demonstrated particularly high idiomatic usage rates, indicating that grammatical characteristics of postpositions influence the establishment of idioms. This study presents the actual usage status of body-part idioms through objective data analysis using a large-scale corpus. Future research should expand to include more body-part idioms and conduct comparative analysis with spoken corpora to identify differences in usage patterns across media types, ultimately developing systematic pedagogical methodologies for idiom instruction applicable in Japanese language education contexts.
