Abstract

This study systematically clarifies the semantic characteristics of idiomatic expressions containing “手 (te, hand)” by classifying them according to particles using the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese (BCCWJ). Idiomatic expressions with “手” appear frequently across diverse contexts, but their polysemy and context dependency pose significant challenges for learners. Using the online search system developed by the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics and the LAGO Institute for Language Research, examples were collected from eleven fields and categorized by particle and part of speech. Among twelve particle types, the analysis focused on four high-frequency particles—“が”, “を”, “に”, and “で”— each appearing more than 3,000 times, and examined “particle + verb” constructions. The results showed that “手を” appeared most frequently (18,142 instances, 46.1%), followed by “手に” (11,983 instances, 30.5%), “手で” (3,382 instances, 8.6%), and “手が” (3,178 instances, 8.1%). These four combinations accounted for 76.6 percent of all occurrences and demonstrated that each particle carries a distinct semantic function. Notably, “を” often indicates the purpose or target of an action, while “手で” followed by a verb showed no idiomatic usage. This corpus-based approach contributes to Japanese language pedagogy by supporting the objective selection of high-priority idiomatic expressions according to learner proficiency. The quantitative findings further support the development of context-sensitive instructional materials and learner-centered curricula that address difficulties in particle selection. By elucidating the semantic mechanisms underlying particle–verb combinations, this study offers practical frameworks that enhance learners’ comprehension and communicative proficiency in authentic Japanese contexts.
