Abstract
In previous research on aspect in Japanese, there appear to be relatively few studies that focus specifically on the lexical aspect inherent in the verb itself. While various aspectual concepts such as "action, change, state, result, momentary, continuous, telic" are frequently mentioned in studies of aspect, even verbs classified within the same group can express a wide variety of temporal meanings. This study, therefore, aims to examine the lexical aspect of "subject-initiated action verbs," with a particular focus on the usage patterns of phase verbs. Through analyzing the connection with phase verbs, the study makes the following observations: (1) the use of phase verbs is necessary to clearly mark telicity; (2) verbs marked [+processuality] assume a processual structure internally, while [–processuality] verbs presuppose repeated motion and assume each phase through repetition; (3) thus, iterativity is closely related to processuality; and (4) the phases expressed by phase verbs are influenced by the inherent lexical aspect encoded in the verbs themselves. This paper, through an examination of phase verbs as lexical aspects, confirms that the lexical aspect of verbs is closely related not only to grammatical aspect but also to the content of expression in terms of aspectuality—namely, (1) telicity, (2) processuality, (3) iterativity, and (4) phasicity. From this point forward, the lexical aspect of verbs will require further meticulous investigation, not only in relation to grammatical aspect, but also in terms of its interaction with various aspectual forms, including phase verbs.
