Abstract
The claims made in this paper can be summarized in terms of a discussion of the potential of “naru-equivalent expressions” as typological indicators in agglutinative OV languages as follows. a) Turkish, as well as Korean and Japanese, form a very similar group in terms of OV word order and agglutinative morphological structure, and have similar equivalents to naru expressions. b) In Japanese, the opposition between naru and suru expressions was initially captured in comparison with English (Ikegami 1981), but by contrasting languages with similar typological structures, it is possible to further elaborate on the commonalities found in the languages. c) Although the cognitive-semantic subject–verb schema in equivalents to naru expressions is common, the historical extension from it is not uniform, even among languages with similar morphological structures. A meaningful language contrast can be made by exploring which typological indicators are valid. For example, we can point out that naru and honorifics are linked at the auxiliary verb level in Japanese, but not in Turkish.
