Abstract

This study is to examine how much contribution has school education, especially Korean language one, made to the development of students’ literacy skills. The results are as follows. First, in student-centered education, the role of teachers is defined as that of facilitators and supporters of learning. But this keeps teachers from helping students develop their literacy skills. Teachers’ active intervention and responsible guidance are necessary for students’ literacy development. Second, classes based on activities do not greatly help students’ literacy development. Of course, schools should provide students with chances to get appropriate experiences, and these activities and experiences should be guided by subject knowledge. Third, the current Korean language curriculum is organized around academics, which does not help students improve their literacy skills. In order to foster students’ literacy, it is urgent to restructure the educational content to make it more focused on Korean language skills by moving away from fragmented knowledge and segmented functions. To help improve students’ literacy skills, it would be necessary to set Korean language skills as a core goal of the Korean language curriculum, and as a core competency for all subjects as well.
