Abstract
Boredom is a prevalent emotional factor found among learners of a foreign language. However, empirical research on Korean language learners in this regard is still scarce. Therefore, using a phenomenological approach, the study investigated how beginner-level Chinese learners at a university-affiliated Korean language institute experience and interpret boredom. The study analyzed the interview data using Giorgi’s (1985) four-step method, which yielded nine meaning units and four thematic clusters. The results indicate that boredom arises from learner, teacher, the learning community, and classroom environment. Contributing conditions include declining motivation, dissatisfaction with lessons, low levels of enthusiasm of teachers and interaction, and weak peer relationships. In addition, the study identified that some characteristics related to teaching materials and methods are the central factors that trigger boredom. These characteristics include repetition and monotony, lack of practicality, inefficiency, and excessive formalization. The findings expand some previous studies in the context of English learning and offer deeper insight into academic emotions in Korean language education.
