본 연구는 2018년 프랑스 쇼몽 국제정원박람회의 주제 ‘사색의 정원’에 맞춰 출품된 「사색의 끈」 정원의 설계 개념, 공간 구성, 조형 요소의 상징성을 고찰한 사례 기반 연구이다. 본 작품은 동양의 유배 개념을 모티브로 하여 속박된 공간 속에서 사유와 내면의 확장을 정원 공간으로 시각화한 것이다. 정원은 ‘유배지’와 ‘외부 세계’라는 이분법적 구조이며, 낚싯대 조형물은 ‘생각의 끈’을 상징하는 핵심 장치이다. 설계자는 곡선 형태와 재료의 조합을 통해 사유의 흐름과 정서적 대비를 공간적으로 표현하고자 하였으며, 이를 단순한 조경을 넘어 개념적 관점에서 분석하였다. 특히 본 연구는 정원을 철학적 담론의 매체로 해석하며, 상징적 오브제와 공간의 이분법적 구도가 ‘유배’라는 추상적 개념을 시각적으로 전환하는 방식을 분석하였다. 또한 설계와 실제 구현 과정에서 발생한 재료의 현지 조달 한계, 식재 시기의 불일치, 구조적 제약 등의 문제를 구체적으로 논하며, 의도와 실현 사이의 간극을 탐색하였다.
Abstract
This study examines the conceptual design, spatial composition, and symbolic elements of the garden project A String of Thoughts, exhibited in response to the 2018 theme “Gardens of Thought” at the Festival International des Jardins de Chaumont-sur-Loire in France. The project adopts the Eastern philosophical concept of exile as its central motif, visualizing introspection and inner expansion within confined space through garden design. The garden is composed as a dichotomy between the “exilic zone” and the “outer world” with a fishing rod sculpture serving as a symbolic device representing the “string of thought.” Through curved forms and material composition, the designer aimed to express the flow of thought and emotional contrast within the spatial environment. Conceptually, the study interprets the garden as a medium of philosophical discourse, analyzing how symbolic objects and spatial dichotomy translate abstract notions of exile into visual form. In addition, the paper discusses the gap between the intended design and its realization, highlighting limitations such as local material availability, plant blooming cycles, and structural constraints that required on-site adaptation. This paper interprets the project as conceptual art rather than conventional landscape design, and discusses the physical limitations and site-specific adaptations encountered during implementation, addressing the gap between design intention and realization.
