Abstract

Recent garden festivals and show gardens are more actively addressing environmental issues and forming a consensus with the public than ever before. This study aims to analyze the trends and significance of garden works responding to contemporary environmental issues, focusing on the Chaumont International Garden Festival in France. To achieve this, the study examines the aspects of integration and convergence in show gardens, reflection of environmental issues and zeitgeist, and audience engagement. The characteristics of modern show gardens were summarized into three categories: relationship, solution, and participation. Based on this framework, an analysis was conducted on the garden works from five specific years over the past 32 years of the Chaumont International Garden Festival, where environmental issues were the central theme. The findings reveal the following trends and significance: First, show gardens redefine the relationship between nature and humans, leading to a change in human roles and attitudes towards nature. Second, they seek practical alternatives and solutions to environmental problems through the integration of function and art. Third, they raise awareness of environmental issues by encouraging direct audience participation. This study is significant in that it provides foundational data for guiding the development of sustainable garden culture by clearly outlining the social roles and responsibilities that show gardens must fulfill in addressing the various environmental issues faced by modern society.
