Abstract

With the advent of a super-aged society and the rise in both mental and physical health issues, interest in nature-based healing environments has grown significantly. This study aims to analyze the therapeutic effects of gardens within healthcare facilities and to propose design guidelines for hospital gardens that enhance their healing potential. For this purpose, field investigations and comparative analyses were conducted on six general hospitals, Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital, Korea University Anam Hospital, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Severance Hospital, and Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospitalin the Seoul metropolitan area as well as the “Garden of Life” at Kansai Rosai Hospital in Osaka, Japan. Nine criteria, 1. location, 2. openness, 3. year of construction, 4. area, 5. spatial organization, 6. introduced facilities, 7. plant composition, 8. paving materials, and 9. maintenance conditions, based on the framework by Marcus and Barnes (1995) were used for analysis. The findings revealed that most hospital gardens in Korea had limitations in fulfilling their therapeutic functions, with room for improvement in spatial zoning, plant selection, and user-centered design—except for a few recent cases. In response, the study proposes ten key guidelines for designing therapeutic hospital gardens: multi-sensory stimulation, visual accessibility, functional zoning, diverse plant composition, use of safe materials, exposure to sunlight, spaces for gardening activities, sustainability, provision of safety and convenience facilities, and ensuring user privacy. These guidelines may serve as a foundation for future therapeutic garden planning and policy development in healthcare settings.
