초록

This study aims to analyze word order constraints for German binomial idioms with a focus on phonetico-phonological constraints according to the principle of Cooper/Ross. Using the results, the investigator was able to set the degree among the overall principles that rule word orders for German binomial idioms. In addition, a comparison between German and English in terms of constraints shed light onto commonalities and differences in quantitative and qualitative constraints between the two languages. The cross-linguistics results between them also showed an overall similar distribution in constraints, which primarily proves that the principle of Cooper/Ross has universality. In short, the percentage degrees of the individual principles in German according to the principle of Cooper/ Ross were as follows: 1)A phonetico-phonological analysis is focused on the degree of constraints and hierarchies exercised upon the word order of binomial idioms by such principles as, P, C¹, V, F, C², C³, Cp. In β≧ɑ, P(94.7%), C¹(86.8), V(73.7%), F(65.8%), C²(71.4%), C³ (72.9%), Cp(86.8%). In β>ɑ, P(37.6%), C¹(18.4), V(45.5%), F(36.8%), C²(36.8%), C³(39.1%), Cp(27.8%). The word order constraints of German and English were close to each other within 10% across all the principles except for Cp in case of β≧ɑ and V in case of β>ɑ, which proves that the two languages share a very similar mechanism of word order constraints. Those results indicate that phonetico-phonological principle of Cooper/ Ross has significance as a principle and can be regarded as a linguistically universal principle.
