초록
This paper reports in-depth, longitudinal interviews with a group of Korean masters' students at a single university in the UK throughout one year, aimed at investigating their progress and specific pattern in developing interaction with their supervisors and adjusting to the supervision in the British higher education. The findings from the qualitative study indicate that all the participants did not initially understand the nature of supervisory meetings in the UK. Despite their greater understanding of UK supervision system as the terms progressed, the key cultural factors such as ‘face’ and ‘hierarchy’ have continuously rendered them being highly passive in and hesitant about contacting and communicating in person with their supervisors for academic advice. Moreover, their attempts to overcome such problems have even decreased at the final term, although they desired to improve their communication skills as well as support their academic success through the meetings, pointing us to the importance of orienting foreign students to the core educational system in the UK at the beginning of the courses and further guiding teachers to `fully’ recognize cultural differences of the foreign students when performing academic supervision.
