초록

This paper addresses the constraints that govern the formation of binomial idioms in English. It is shown that the most striking property of binomials, their strict irreversibility, follows without construction- specific assumptions, from the interaction of six classes of constraints that are independently motivated in the grammar of English: constraints on syllables, longer resonant, more initial consonants, a more obstruent initial segment, vowel containing a lower second formant frequency and a less obstruent. It is argued that these highly general constraints may impose conflicting requirements on binomial candidates, and that these conflicts are resolved in an optimality-theoretic manner. The constraints are violable and ranked. To conclude this paper, I note that a number of phonological constraints on frozen ordering exist and that these constraints appear to operate with varying degrees of strength. Furthermore, the phonological rule governing second-formant frequency relations between place 1 and place 2 conjuncts interacts systematically with at least two of the semantic constraints on freezes discussed in this paper. This article critically examines the claims of the above- mentioned proponents, especially their explanation of the phonological constraints conflict. It will also be shown that Binomial Idioms is the predecessor of the Optimality Theory in that it shares the idea with the OT that constaints are relative, they may conflict, and that they are in strict dominace relationship.
