초록

The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics of the complex semantic structure of English verbs to compare them to those of the Korean language. When we look into the structure of an English verb, even though it has a single simplex appearance, we get to know that its internal semantic structure has both a vertical frame and a horizontal frame. The vertical frame shows that the semantic structure of an English verb is composed of the feature elements which turn up at the same time. Also, the horizontal frame reveals that an English verb has the structure with the concept of a time passing in it. On the other hand, a Korean verb doesn't have these frames and the semantic features of a Korean verb appear in the utterance with a division into a few single verbs. Through these evidences, we can know that, in their meanings, an English verb has a semantically segmental structure, while a Korean verb has a morphologically segmental structure.
