초록
The traditional analyses of passive constructions in the framework of generative grammar have made an analogy between English verbal passives and their Korean counterparts that derive with the affixation of the passive morphemes -i/hi/li/ki-. Hence, it has been widely assumed that universal principles underlie both English and Korean passives without taking into serious account the language-specific properties found in Korean. This paper challenges that long-standing assumption and argues for the necessity to consider the unique syntactic and semantic properties observed in each pattern of Korean passives, while presenting a series of evidence indicating that the Korean passives involving -i/hi/li/ki- are generated without movement from the internal argument position. Specifically, purpose clauses, ECM constructions, and inalienable possession constructions are discussed, as they relate to passives, in order to underpin the proposal that the Korean passive verbs are either unergative or transitive.
