초록
Korean is a well-known nominative-accusative language in which subjects and objects are marked by the post-nominal particles -i/ka and -(l)ul, respectively. As has long been observed, the subject and the object are not always overtly marked by these particles. By employing two discourse-pragmatic factors, processing load and informational prominence, this study investigates when heritage Korean speakers use the subject and object markers overtly and when they do not, and how their uses differ from those of native Korean speakers. It claims that, socioculturally, heritage Korean speakers and native Korean speakers use the two markers in different ways, so that, following Nagy (2016), Korean heritage languages need to be treated and investigated as varieties of Korean in the world, not from the perspective of the Korean native language.
