초록

It is said that any extended text has an overt distinction between the language of the main story line and the language of supportive material which does not itself narrate the main episode. We refer to the former as ‘foregrounding' and the latter as ‘backgrounding'. In ‘foregrounding' the events succeed in the iconic order and the events in the ‘backgrounding' do not reflect that order but can be concurrent with the foregrounded events. This study focuses on how the cognitive notions, ‘groundings' are reflected on the morphosyntactic levels such as aspect and word order in the complex sentences extracted from the 13th Spanish narrative text, 『La Primera Crónica General de España de Alfonso X』. The foreground-background distinction may correspond to the main-subordinate clause respectively, and some tendency of each clause will be pursued at the word order types and aspect. Furthermore, we will also try to exploit probable morphosyntactic gap -therefore grounding differences-, after classifying preposed subordinate clauses from postposed subordinate clauses.
