Abstract
The analysis of the left periphery of a clause has been actively pursued since the mid-1990s, with Rizzi (1997) and others at the forefront of this research trend. As a result of this research, a series of functional categories such as Top, Foc, Q, etc., have been empirically shown to be mapped optionally onto the left periphery of a clause through an computational procedure. This study starts from the assumption that these discourse functions also act as a crucial factor in determining specific word orders in Spanish. Por lo tanto, this study will also seek to identify the differences in the functional categories that are merged in the left periphery of a clause, which underlie the differences in word order observed between medieval and modern Spanish. Through an intuitive search of medieval Spanish materials, we have found that the [Cl+T] order is an unmarked, economical, and indispensable word order in both medieval and modern Spanish. Therefore, in this study, we will analyze word orders that deviate from this basic structure as part of the discourse-related derivation process. To demonstrate this, the study will show that differences in word order between medieval and modern Spanish, as evidenced by the movement of clitic pronouns and sentence constituents to the left periphery based on Rizzi's criterial configuracion, are due to differences in discourse-related functional categories that are reanalyzed between the two periods.
