이 논문에서 답하고자 하는 물음은 “트롤리 문제의 핵심이 과연 무엇인가?”이다. 첫째, 트롤리 문제에 대한 기존의 답변을 살펴본다. 이들은 크게 결과주의적 답변과 비결과주의적 답변으로 나눠질 수 있다. 둘째, 이들 답변들이 지니는 한계를 밝히고자 한다. 예를 들어, 결과주의적 답변은 ‘해악-도움의 비대칭성’에 의해서만 설명될 수 있는 도덕적 직관 때문에 한계를 지니며, 비결과주의적 답변은 이와 상응하여 ‘이중효과이론’의 적용성에 따른 한계를 지닌다. 마지막으로 이러한 한계를 넘어설 수 있는 가능성을 타진하고자 한다.
Abstract
We seek to answer the venerable question, “what exactly is the trolley problem?” in this paper. First, the responses that have traditionally given are surveyed. These come from a couple of influential ethical persuasions: the consequentialist camp and the non-consequentialist one. Second, the constraints and/or the limitations of those responses shall be discussed. For instance, the consequentialist has to make good of their “harm-benefit symmetry” doctrine; and, the non-consequentialist their “double effect” doctrine. We conclude this paper with our own attempt to give an appropriate response to the trolley problem.
