트롤리 문제는 소수를 희생시켜 다수를 구할지에 관한 도덕적 딜레마를 제시하는 사고 실험이다. 트롤리 문제는 토론 교육의 논제로 쉽게 활용될 수 있지만, 도덕적 추론과 가치 판단을 포함하고 있어 문제의 본질을 정확히 이해하고 지도하는 것은 쉽지 않다. ‘폭주하는 트램 기관사 시나리오’는 원래 필리파 풋이 이중 효과의 원칙(DDE)을 비판하기 위해 제안한 것으로, 이후 주디스 자비스 톰슨에 의해 트롤리 문제로 정의되었다. 트롤리 문제를 토론의 주제로 적절히 다루기 위해서는 사고 실험 의 특성, 이중 효과의 원칙, 적극적 의무와 소극적 의무, 최근 이론인 이중 과정 이론에 관한 이해가 필요하다. 본 연구는 트롤리 문제를 논제로 다루었을 때 토론을 지도하는 교사가 겪게 되는 문제점을 분석하고 이를 개선할 수 있는 토론 교수·학습 전략을 제안하였다. 트롤리 문제를 토론 교육에 활용하려면 교사는 토론 참여자의 도덕적 사고를 자극하고 촉진할 수 있도록 탐색, 설명, 제시, 강조, 안내 등과 같은 교수 활동을 치밀하게 준비해야 한다.
Abstract
The problem presents a moral dilemma concerning whether to sacrifice a few to save many, illustrated through a thought experiment. The Trolley Problem is easily employed as a discussion topic; however, accurately understanding and guiding this issue is challenging due to the involvement of moral reasoning and value judgment. The "runaway tram driver scenario" was originally proposed by Philippa Foot to critique the Doctrine of Double Effect (DDE) and was later defined as the Trolley Problem by Judith Jarvis Thomson. Effectively addressing the Trolley Problem as a discussion topic requires an understanding of the nature of thought experiments, the Doctrine of Double Effect, the distinction between positive and negative duties, and the recent Dual-Process Theory. This study analyzes the challenges faced by instructors leading discussions on the Trolley Problem and proposes teaching and learning strategies to enhance guidance in these discussions.
