Abstract

'Time' is scarcely focused independently in the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas. It used to be dealt with in the context of understanding and explaining 'eternity' which is the main concern of St. Thomas. Meanwhile a thorough grasp of the concept of time, though it is in itself of secondary importance, is required because of an adequate understanding of eternity, which could be reached properly by comparison between time and eternity. On that account, St. Thomas could not disregard the tension between the opposite opinions on the meaning of time. One of those tensions is on whether the motion and change of the real world is prerequisite for the existence of time of not. Some says that time would cease to be if there would be no more any motion and change. St. Thomas approaches this question by defining what the constitutive elements of time are mainly from the viewpoint of its metaphysical principles. According to him, it is the motion that constitutes time materially, while the formal constituent of it is the activity of the human soul perceiving those motions under the aspect of before and after. From the existential aspect, however, time is not a proper subject of existence. It itself is not a member of the real existing world, albeit it is firmly based on and closely connected to it. The main purpose of his argumentation is not to identify what on earth time is but to discriminate between beings subject to time and beings free of it. In other words, the question 'what time is' is for him closely connected to the question 'what else is there save time and what that is'. This signifies that the questions on time and the related questions are for St. Thomas still more metaphysical ones than we normally expected these days.
