본 논문의 목적은 언어와 의미의 관계를 고찰하는데 있다. 그런데 언어의 의미에 대한 관심은 비단 철학에서만의 것은 아니다. 이미 언어학과 심리학에서도 그것들은 주된 논의의 대상이 되어 왔으며, 심지어 이 두 학문에서는 학제적 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 언어학과 철학, 심리학에서 언어를 연구하는 목적과 내용, 방법론에는 유사성과 차이점이 공존한다. 언어의 의미를 다룰 때 언어 기호와 의미의 관계에 관심을 갖는 점은 매우 유사했다. 특히 그것은 철학에서 지시와 의미라는 두 개념의 관계성을 고찰함으로써 연구되고 있다. 논자는 이를 지시이론이라는 이름으로 부르며, 철학자 가운데에서 프레게와 러셀, 그리고 스트로슨의 지시이론을 비교하고, 각자의 대안들을 기술하였다. 그들 중 일부는 의미론적 지시론자로, 또 다른 일부는 화용론적 지시론자로 분류할 수 있다. 그렇게 분류할 수 있는 기준이 무엇이며, 그들의 언어에 대한 이해가 어떠했기에 그렇게 분류할 수 있었는지를 고찰하였다.
Abstract
This study aims to study the relation between language and meaning. Philosophy is concerned about these. And other sciences are too. In fact, what the author intends to do as above has been done already in linguistics and philosophy. There are similarities and differences in the goals, contents, and methodologies of studying language in linguistics, philosophy and psychology. Above all, these two areas are quite similar in that they pay special attention to the relation between semantic symbols and meanings when it comes to the meaning of language. In particular, the relation between the two concepts - reference and meaning - is examined in philosophy. The author calls it the theory of reference, compares the theories of reference of such philosophers as Frege, Russell, and Strawson, and suggests alternative ideas for each of them. Some of the philosophers may be classified to those of the semantic theory of reference and some to those of the pragmatic theory of reference. The basis for classification and their understanding of language in such classification are investigated in this study.
