언어에 대한 논의는 예상 보다 훨씬 복잡하고, 그 논제가 다양하다. 언어학자들에게 있어 특정 언어의 표현이 어떤 의미를 갖는지, 그리고 어떤 조건 하에서 그런 의미를 갖게 되는지, 어떤 과정을 통해 그러한 의미를 갖게 되는지가 주된 관심의 대상이었다. 이러한 기준 하에서 언어의 의미에 대한 몇 가지 이론들이 제시되었다. 의미론에 대한 질문은 ‘한 언어가 표현하는 의미란 무엇인가?’라는 질문으로부터 시작되는데, 이 때 의미를 일종의 실체로 파악하고 있으며, 특히 실체와 언어적 표현 사이에는 어떤 연관성이 존재한다고 보는 견해가 지배적이었다. 그러므로 의미론에 대한 대답은 먼저 ‘의미가 무엇인지’, 다음으로 언어적 표현과 실체가 어떤 관련을 맺고 있는지에 대한 대답을 제시함으로써 분명해 질 것으로 보이는데, 이에 대해 올스튼은 언어의미론의 세 가지 유형, 즉 “지시론”(referential theory), “관념론”(ideational theory), “행동론”(behavioral theory)을 제시한다. 본고에서는 이 세 가지 언어의미론-특히 아우구스티누스를 중심으로 한 지시론-을 살펴본 후, 이들은 어떤 언어적 표현은 일정한 의미를 갖는다는 가정을 모두 포함하고 있다는 것과, 그것이 가능한 이유는 무엇보다도 유의미한 언어적 표현들이 어떤 것-그것이 사물이든, 관념이든, 행동이든 무관하게-과 대응함으로써 의미를 갖게 된다는 점을 공유하고 있음을 밝히게 될 것이다. 또한 전기 비트겐슈타인이 표방하고 있는 언어의미론이 지시론(혹은 의미론적 지시론)의 특징들을 공유하고 있음을 밝히게 될 것이다. 이것은 그의 주저 『논고』에서의 그림이론과 분석적 방법을 통해서 드러나고 있다.
Abstract
The debate on language is much more complex than one expects, and the topic for the discussion is diverse. For the linguists, what significance a particular linguistic expression has, and under what conditions that expression comes to have such Tsignificance, and through what process that expression comes to have such significance were the main objects of interest. A few theories have been presented about the significance of language under these criteria. Questions about semantics start with the question, ‘what is the significance that a language expresses?’, and at this point the significance is perceived as a kind of substance, and especially an opinion that certain correlation exists between substance and linguistic expression was dominant. Therefore, the answer to the semantics seems to be made clear by presenting an answer, first of all, to the question, 'what is the meaning?', and then to 'what relation does the linguistic expression have to the substance?'. In connection with this, Allston presents three categories of linguistic semantics: "referential theory", "ideational theory", "behavioral theory". In this piece of writing, these three linguistic semantics - especially, the referential theory centered on Aurelius Augustine - are examined, and then it is clarified that all these categories of semantics include the supposition that certain linguistic expression has fixed meaning, and that they share the reason why the supposition is possible, which is most of all, that meaningful linguistic expressions respond to something, regardless of whether it is an object, idea or act. In addition, it will be clarified that the linguistic semantics that Wittgenstein claims to advocate in the former period shares the characteristics of referential theory (or the referential theory of semantics). This is revealed through the picture theory and the analytic method in his major work, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus.
