Abstract
Conatus of self-preservation is necessary for existential maintenance. In other words, it is not too much to say that conatus is the essence of human beings. But in spite of this essential role of conatus in human beings, the darker side of conatus expands. For example, if we each exercise our own conatus, the competition or the conflict with the other caused by conatus will be unavoidable. Because the other can be counted as an enemy who threatens my life and my peace for the intensification of his own being. Thomas Hobbes declared this phenomenon as a war of all against all. Thus Hobbes calls for a strong government in order to control the conflict and achieve the peace. But Levinas completely overthrows the thinking of Hobbes. That is to say, the other is not an enemy but rather a human being, even one whose misfortune I am responsible for. This thought lets us imagine the peace as totally different from the peace proposed by Hobbes. This will also show us new anthropology that Levinas tried to imagine.
