Abstract
This paper tries to read first eight paragraphs of Emmanuel Levinas's masterpiece, Totality and Infinity, very closely with purpose to find an adequate idea for peace in East-Asia. It will be shown that these paragraphs contain the essential thought of Levinas on peace and war and that the ethical and metaphysical orientation of Levinasian philosophy is motivated by his concern for peace among humans and that philosophy of Levinas is a political philosophy. The contrast between 'peace on the basis of war' and 'eschatology of messianic peace' is crucial in this discussion on peace and war. Levinas shows that peace is possible if and only if the other is accepted as the other who can't be reduced to any form which humans can manipulate. This paper is concluded by the observation that hospitality towards others rather than laying emphasis on common heritage will be more important condition for the possibility of peace in East-Asia.
