Abstract
Although freedom is one of the most important things in human life, we live in constant conflict with others. On the surface, the principle of coordination and reconciliation seems to be the principle that moves society, but the threat of war continues to shape our lives which is becoming more and more individualistic in the modern society of infinite competition. War is a matter of the violent confronting of others, and the problem of freedom lies at the heart of my relationship with the other. This paper began with the question of the essential meaning of freedom. Because of the Copernican revolution-like turn to the subjective in Kant’s philosophy, we often equate Kant’s notion of freedom with the active capacity of human reason. However, this study finds that Kant’s freedom, transcendental freedom, the most active concept of ‘starting from me’, implies a passive aspect that enables human relations beyond natural causality. It makes it possible to connect Kant’s concept of freedom with Levinas’ ethics. This paper seeks to find a way to look at the concept of freedom, which was often considered active, from a different angle through the comparison of Kant’s concept of autonomy and Levinas’ concept of heteronomy.
