Abstract

For entering into the subject of“homoiosis theo”in the Platonic dialogues with a special focus on concepts pertaining to human soul’s transformation and divinization, some issues have been discussed in Timaeus as the physical, Republic as the ethical, and Theaetetus as the epistemological aspect. Also several themes, including immortality, mania, eros, a way of divine life and rituals have been treated corresponding to the cultural soil of the Platonic tradition in late antiquity. The ideal of man becoming Godlike is mainly divided into three parts. Firstly, there is an epistemological-ontological view of truth focusing on the intellectual aspect, secondly, an ethical view of Justice, and finally a pursuit of divine life as a combination of both. The term ‘homoiosis theo(becoming Godlike)’is a key concept that a Syrian neo-Platonist Iamblichus strives for elucidating how human soul is transformed into superiors without the aid of discursive reasoning. I shall then make an effort for finding the separate but connected elements between two theurgical systems: the Hellenic and Christian theurgies on the basis of a key concept. The theoretical continuity between Iamblichus’s and Pseudo-Dionysius’s ritual systems should be legitimately examined in order to provide an opportunity to clearly understand the religio-philosophical characteristics of the late neoplatonism in late antiquity. Consequently, I maintain, associated with this integral view of Platonism and Christianity, Iamblichus’s neoplatonic and Christian theurgies have no essential differences, since both mutually shared features with the emphasis on ritualistic behaviors beyond the limit of human intelligence. In conclusion, since the cause(aitia) and the work(ergon) of two theurgical systems are similar the continuity between the Hellenic and Christian theurgical systems could be enough to obtain adequate grounds.
