니사의 그레고리오스의 『모세의 생애』(De Vita Moysis)에 나타난 그리스도교 덕 윤리 연구 ― 플라톤 철학과의 연속성과 불연속의 문제를 중심으로

카파도키아 교부 중 한 사람인 니사의 그레고리오스(Gregory of Nyssa)의 그리스도교 윤리는 플라톤 사상과의 비판적 대화를 통해서 형성되었다. 존재론적 차원에서 감각적 세계와 지성의 세계를 이원적으로 구분하는 플라톤 사상을 수용하면서도 그레고리오스는 무한한 신과 유한한 피조물 사이의 차이를 우선시하는 그리스도교 플라톤주의자(Christian Platonist)였다. 유한한 감각의 세계가 신의 피조물이라는 생각은 변화와 성장이 피조물의 고유한 특성이라는 사실을 의미한다. 따라서 그레고리오스에게 인간이 신적 덕성을 향해서 변화 성장해 나간다는 것은 매우 긍정적, 적극적 의미를 지닌다. 그는 덕을 지식과 동일시한 플라톤과 달리 무한한 신에 대한 믿음을 통해서 인간은 신적 덕성의 완성을 지향하게 된다고 생각한다. 플라톤에게 궁극적 실재인 이데아는 빛으로 표상되는 데 반하여, 그레고리오스의 무한한 신은 어둠으로 표상된다. 신이 어둠으로 나타난다는 것은 신의 본질은 인간에게 감추어져 있다는 뜻이다. 인간이 신에게 다가가는 길은 믿음을 통해서 뿐이고, 인간의 지성적 노력으로는 결코 신적인 것에 이를 수 없다. 그레고리오스에게 덕성 자체인 신은 무한하고 어둠 속에 있는 존재이기에 덕성의 완성은 불가능하고, 오직 더 높은 덕성을 갖추기 위한 끝없는 노력만 있을 뿐이다. 이런 입장은 비규정성을 부정적 속성으로 이해했던 그리스 사상과의 단절을 보여준다. 그레고리오스는 플라톤주의와 그리스도교 사상을 조화시키려고 했지만, 둘 사이에 충돌이 일어날 경우 그리스도교적 입장에서 비판적으로 플라톤 사상을 수용하면서 헬레니즘 문화의 그리스도교화를 성취했다.
Abstract
The Christian ethics of Gregory of Nyssa, one of the Cappadocian Fathers is shaped by a critical dialogue with Platonic thought. He is a Christian Platonist who gives priority to the distinction between infinite God and finite creatures, while embracing the Platonic dualism which sharply distinguishes the sensible world and the intelligible world. The idea that the finite sensible world is the creation of an infinite God implies that change and growth are integral parts of creation. Therefore, for Gregory of Nyssa, growth into the divine virtue has positive implications. Against Plato who claims that virtue is identical with knowledge, Gregory thinks that by the meditating on faith man becomes perfect in virtue. For Gregory perfection of virtue is impossible since God, virtue itself, is infinite being. This marks a separation from the Greek thought in general which regards the infinite as negative and defective. Though Gregory tries to reconcile Platonic thought with Christian thought, he radically transforms Platonic ideas into Christian ones.
