Abstract

Pseudo-Dionysius wants to answer how the total transcendence of God can be connected with the thought of self-transmission in understanding the essence of God. He understands the divine essence in two aspects: the unity(henosis) and the distinction(diakrisis) through the Neoplatonic thought. These two aspects are interpreted from the Christian point of view of a distinction between the divine essence that is preserved in divine transcendence and the divine essence that emerges in the form of self-transmission as divine revelation. The two moments of the divine essence interpreted in this way are further deepened in the concept of a God both hidden and revealed. This perception of the essence of God is a basis for understanding hierarchy, the ontological system as a reason for Christian creation. The hierarchy of beings, whose hidden essence is revealed in the form of self-transmission, is converted into the meaning of creation as a direct existence of God through a unique understanding of the concept of divine illumination(illuminatio divina), rather than a step-by-step transmission of Neoplatonism. Above all, the manifestation of this divine essence aims at the mystical unity(unio mystica) with God through the ascension of the soul in a mystical sense. However, in this process of ascension, the soul is confronted with a negative theological limit through the symbols of ignorance and darkness, and the divine essence that cannot be objectified reveals a new aspect in an emotional and value-semantic dimension beyond rational language. The characteristic of this new divine essence is understood by Pseudo-Dionysius as a love manifested through the hierarchy of beings as creation. This kind of divine love as a driving force of procession and return is characterized by a self-effacing love(ekstasis), which is devoting oneself and pouring oneself out. Moreover, the divine love, which is equated with the good and beauty, is a core of the divine essence, and despite revealing itself fully and being intrinsic to all beings, it not only keeps itself as the transcendent One within itself, but also is a power and ability to attract all things to itself to the same extent. The hierarchical community understood by Pseudo-Dionysius as a full manifestation of the divine essence is a symbol of the divine essence that is full of loose space, even though they are closely related to each other according to the similarity with the divine beings given to each other by the divine illumination. This community finds God's love in itself, where the members advance to a community of deification(theosis) that draws closer to God by participating in the community of love through their own and varied ways.
