이 글은 『테아이테토스』(176a-b)와 『티마이오스』(90a-d)를 중심으로 ‘신을 닮음’이 플라톤 철학에서 지니는 윤리적 의미를 고찰한다. 먼저 이와 관련된 논의에서 ‘표준적인 전거’(locus classicus)가 되는 『테아이테토스』 176b의 언급에 대한 분석을 통해서, 이 구절을 애나스(J. Annas)의 해석과 달리 세상사를 초탈하라는 권고로 해석할 수 없음을 살펴보았다. 그리고 ‘신을 닮음’에서 강조되는 ‘정의’(正義) 개념은 모든 것에 질서를 부여해서 좋음을 구현하고자 하는 지성 개념의 특성과 연관해서 볼 때, 세상-참여적 의미의 정의로 해석할 수 있다고 보았다. 그리고 『티마이오스』 90a-d에 대한 세들리(D. Sedley)의 해석에 대한 비판적 검토를 통해서, 신을 닮기 위해서 우리가 회복해야 할 지성은 관조적 활동을 지향하는 것이 아니며, 지적인 덕과 도덕적인 덕이 비우호적으로 대비되는 것이 아니라는 것을 밝히고자 했다. 그리고 『티마이오스』에서 분명히 제시되듯이, ‘신을 닮음’은 데미우르고스의 선성(善性)을 닮아서, 개인의 차원이든 나라의 차원이든 좋음을 구현하는 것이다. 결국 ‘신을 닮음’을 목표로 하는 플라톤 철학에서 이론과 실천은 분리되어 있지 않다. ‘신을 닮는 것’은 필연적 조건 속에서 지성이 지배하는 삶의 방식을 추구하는 것이지, 이 세상을 초탈해서 지성만의 활동을 추구하는 것은 아니다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the ethical meaning ‘Godlikeness’ has in Plato’s philosophy with focus on Theaetetus 176a-b and Timaeus 90a-d. First, the close examination of Theaetetus 176b, the locus classicus in this discussion, has brought me to realize that this clause can not be taken as an admonition for transcending the worldly affairs, as J. Annas suggests. And the concept of justice, given the characteristic concept of intelligence that seeks to realize the good by endowing order to everything, can be understood in the meaning of realizing justice by social engagement. And by the critical reconsideration of D. Sedley’s interpretation of Timaeus 90a-d, I argue that the intelligence that we have to restore for Godlikeness is not oriented to contemplation and that intellectual virtue and moral virtue are not contrasted unfavorably. As is explicitly suggested in Timaeus, Godlikeness means the imitating of the good nature of demiurge and the realizing of the good whether in private or public terms. After all, in Plato’s philosophy that seeks Godlikeness, theory and practice are not separable. The aim of Godlikeness is not activity of mere intelligence separated from the real life but the way of life where intelligence rules in the inevitable conditions.
