Cultural Education in Translation Programs: Is a Native of the Target Culture Necessary?

초록

언어교육에 있어서 문화는 필수적이면서도 독립적인 분야이다. 원천문화의 역사, 정치, 사회 관습, 사상, 행동양식이 혼합된 교육은 번역 과정에 필수적이다. 본 논문은 목표문화에서 원천문화 출신의 교수자와 그렇지 않은 교수자 중 어느 측이 적합한가에 대한 논제를 제기한다. 번역과 언어 교육에 있어서 원천문화에 속한 다양한 개념과 문화소에 대한 이해가 중요하다. 불충분하거나 그릇된 문화지식은 문화소의 번역을 불가능하게 할 수도 있다. 그릇되게 번역되는 경우에는 원천문화의 핵심을 상실할 수도 있다. 많은 대학들이 원어민 문화 교수자를 교육에 참여하고 있지 않는 실정이지만, 원어민 문화 교수자를 갖추는 것이 필요하다고 판단된다. 언어로서의 영어교육에 대한 기존 연구는 학생의 높은 학업 성취도에 원어민 교수자가 필수적이지 않다는 점을 보여준다. 그러나 문화는 언어와 관련되어있으면서도 확연히 다르다. 본 논문은 기존 연구를 검토하며 원어민 문화 교수자와 비원어민 교수자의 효과를을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이러한 비교는 중요한 문제임에도 직접적으로 연구되지 않아왔다. 필자는 원천문화 출신의 교수자가 문화 교육에 가장 적합하다고 판단하면서, 언어교육의 측면에서 시행된 관련 연구에 대한 자료를 검토하는 동시에 원어민과 비원어민의 문화교육을 비교하는 후속 연구를 촉구하는 바이다.
