Yo qué sé는 주로 감정이 격해진 맥락에서 사용되어 좌절감이나 책임 회피를 드러내는 반면, Qué sé yo는 보다 중립적이고 완화된 불확실성의 태도를 표현한다. 본 연구는 Yo qué sé가 화행구(Speech Act Phrase, SAP)에 고정되어 화자의 정서적 거부감을 반영하는 반면, Qué sé yo는 상대적으로 비두드러진 SAP 해석을 통해 간접적으로 책임을 회피하는 구조를 가진다고 주장한다. 또한 영어(I don’t know, How should I know?) 및 프랑스어(Moi, qu’est-ce que j’en sais?, Qu’est-ce que j’en sais, moi?) 대응 표현들과의 비교를 통해, 이들 모두가 불확실성과 책임 회피를 나타내지만 스페인어 표현이 정서적으로 더 강렬하고, 발화행위적 기능이 통사적으로 더 투명하다는 점을 보여준다. 이러한 대조는 스페인어의 유연한 어순이 화자가 초점과 정서적 강도를 조절할 수 있게 함으로써 더욱 강화된다고 주장한다.
Abstract
This study investigates the syntactic and pragmatic properties of the Spanish expressions Yo qué sé and Qué sé yo, both of which function as discourse markers of uncertainty. Although superficially similar, the two expressions differ systematically in their discourse behavior. Yo qué sé typically appears in emotionally charged contexts to convey frustration or reject responsibility, whereas Qué sé yo expresses a more neutral and mitigated stance of uncertainty. I argue that Yo qué sé is anchored in the Speech Act Phrase(SAP), reflecting the speaker’s affective rejection, while Qué sé yo corresponds to an indirect avoidance of responsibility through a less prominent SAP interpretation. The analysis further compares these expressions with their English(I don’t know vs. How should I know?) and French(Moi, qu’est-ce que j’en sais? vs. Qu’est-ce que j’en sais, moi?) counterparts, showing that although all of these convey uncertainty and responsibility avoidance, the Spanish forms are more emotionally intense and syntactically transparent in their speech-act function. This contrast, I argue, is reinforced by the flexible word order of Spanish, which allows speakers to modulate both emphasis and emotional force.
