Abstract

This study examined language brokering experiences of children from Korean-immigrant families in Canada with aim for understanding experiences of individual human-being by using narrative inquiry methodology. Language brokering from children is very common in immigrant families. However, it is not only simple delivery of information between two languages, but active implementation in motion influenced by cultural, familial, and social norms. So that each participant would compose multi-layered language brokering stories in terms of how to construct her(his) stories to live by and relationships with her(his) parents related to language brokering. As a result of the study, meanings of language brokering experiences from immigrant children are emerged from their narratives. First, a positional reversal of care-giver and care-receiver between parents and child, the language broker. Second, a reversal in power-relationship between parents and child, the language broker. Third, proportional relation between trust in the child and empathy for her(his) parents. Following studies would be ‘language brokering experiences in parents’ side’ and ‘language identities of immigrant children who carrying out language brokering’.
