Abstract
Based on the Element Theory proposed by Backley (2011), this study aims to analyze the phonological structure processing process and phonological drivers in which the error phenomenon of final consonant sound insertion occurs when Chinese learners of Korean vocalize Korean syllable structures such as 'V.CV [V.CV]' and 'VC.V [V.CV]'. The Chinese language includes templates that always have two pairs of Onset-Nucleus (O-N) pairs in the domain of a minimal phonological word. Thus, when Chinese students utter a Korean syllable structure such as 'V.CV [V.CV]' or 'VC.V [V.CV]', the preceding syllable's skeletal points of the post-nuclear segments are filled with the consonant at the initial position of the latter syllable. In dominant elemental phonology, when a syllable ends with a consonant, the syllable component to which the consonant belongs should be properly governed by the empty syllable nucleus behind it. Therefore, a skeletal point where no melodic material exists after the inserted consonant forms. This separates the preceding and ending syllables, resulting in a longer closure duration timing between the two syllables. Concurrently, the elements in the initial position of the second syllable diffuse into those of the first syllable's final consonant, resulting in final consonant interposition. After this interposition of the final consonant, the initial consonant of the second syllable undergoes glottalization by phonologically driving the replacement of constructive elements' roles. Thus, a learner pronounces the consonant of the second syllable as fortis. Therefore, when Chinese learners are instructed on how to pronounce Korean syllabic structures such as [V.CV], they must be guided not to strain the respective places of articulation when pronouncing the initial consonant of the second syllable while simultaneously and consciously lengthening the vowel of the first syllable.
