Abstract
In response to the growing societal demands for sustainable collaboration between regional universities and their surrounding communities, this study aimed to analyze and categorize patterns of local engagement among students at a regional university and identify the characteristics of each group. Latent profile analysis was conducted using data from 256 students at University A, who participated in the ‘2024 K-NSSE’, focusing on items related to local engagement. The analysis identified four distinct profiles: "Passive Participants," "Empathy-Based Limited Actors," "Active Participants," and "Cognitively Aware but Behaviorally Hesitant." The distribution of these profiles differed significantly by sex, academic year, major, and the presence of educational environments supporting local engagement. Moreover, the profiles showed significant differences in levels of local commitment, institutional commitment, and career maturity. These findings provide a nuanced understanding of how students at regional universities engage with their local communities, and offer practical implications for designing curricula and educational programs that promote meaningful local engagement. Furthermore, this study is meaningful in that it provides empirical evidence necessary for advancing policy initiatives aimed at promoting the co-development of universities and their local communities.
