Abstract
This study comparatively analyzes the IB assessment system and the Korean student assessment system, both of which emphasize descriptive, instruction-linked evaluation, yet differ significantly in their approaches. Motivated by the current challenges in Korea’s assessment practices, this research aims to identify reference points by analyzing the structure and principles of the IB program. Through a comparative analysis, the study identifies key similarities and differences between the two systems. Additionally, a survey of experienced Korean teachers familiar with IB assessments provides practical insights into the implementation and operation of the IB framework. Findings indicate common experiences among teachers in areas such as aligned assessment direction, instruction-linked evaluation, feedback practices, and moderation processes. The study underscores the need to prioritize validity alongside fairness in Korean assessment practices and calls for a reconsideration of achievement-standard-based design in light of the IB’s criterion-referenced approach. Institutional measures—such as quality assurance systems—and the development of professional knowledge are suggested to enhance assessment reliability. While acknowledging the strengths of the IB system, the study concludes that direct comparisons are constrained by differing historical and educational contexts. Instead, it proposes exploring a complementary relationship between the two systems to enrich the quality and effectiveness of student assessment in Korea.
