Abstract

This study examines the social phenomenon in which the burden of family caregiving, amid changing family structures, disproportionately shifts to young, vulnerable caregivers within the households. individuals vulnerable within their households. Situated within the life stage of emerging adulthood, young carers are expected to pursue education or prepare for employment. The educational capital accumulated during this critical period significantly affects their transition to the labor market and their long-term quality of life. However, owing to the absence of familial support and repeated resource depletion, young carers often face restricted access to education and employment opportunities, and experience social isolation and marginalization. Through an analysis of literary representations of young carers, this study elucidates their lived experiences, challenges of career discontinuity, emotional isolation, and delayed labor market entry resulting from caregiving responsibilities. From an educational perspective, this study underscores the urgency of addressing the lack of social support for young carers during the pivotal period of emerging adulthood. In particular, schools can function as crucial sites where young carers build social networks and accumulate social capital, while supporting those whose resilience has been weakened by resource loss to regain self-efficacy through community participation and educational experiences. Critically reflecting on the societal norm that frames caregiving as a private duty, this study asserts that young carers must be granted the right to freely choose between education and career development.
