본 연구는 가족 내 관계 및 역할 구조 속에서 가족돌봄청년의 돌봄 수행이 어떠한 방식으로 형성되고 지속되는지를 구조적으로 탐색하였다. 만 19세 이상 34세 이하 가족돌봄청년 19명을 대상으로 심층 인터뷰를 실시하고, 주제분석(Thematic Analysis)을 통해 질적 사례 분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 돌봄 수행은 대부분 비자발적으로 시작되며 유년기부터 일상화되어 내면화되는 경향이 나타났다. 전통적인 감정노동을 넘어서는 ‘마음쓰임 노동’으로 인한 정신적 부담도 확인되었다. 가족구조 변화(핵가족화, 가족 해체, 형제자매 수 감소)는 돌봄 책임의 집중과 청년기과업 수행의 제약을 심화시켰다. 성별에 따라 돌봄 수행 방식과 의미 형성에 차이가 있었으며, 여성 청년은 가족 내 위치와 성역할 규범의 이중적 기대 속에서 남성보다 더 강하게 돌봄 책임을 내면화하고 수행하였다. 친족 네트워크는 지원 자원이자 동시에 간섭과 책임 전가의 주체로이중적 기능을 하였다. 사회문화적 맥락에서는 ‘젊은 돌봄자’에 대한 편견과 정상가족 이데올로기가 교차하며 돌봄 노동의 비가시화 문제가 드러났다. 본 연구는 가족돌봄청년의 돌봄 수행을 가족구조, 성역할 규범, 관계적 권력, 감정이 교차하는 복합적 사회현상으로 규명하고, 이에 대응하는 정책적 논의를 제언한다.
Abstract
This study examines how young carers’ caregiving practices are shaped and sustained within family relationships and role structures. In-depth interviews were conducted with 19 young carers aged 19–34, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings show that caregiving is often involuntary and becomes internalized through early and routine experiences. Persistent emotional labor, described as “mindful labor,” leads to accumulated psychological burden. Changes in family structure—such as nuclearization and fewer siblings—intensify caregiving concentration and constrain young adults’ life-course tasks. Gender differences were evident: female carers were more likely to internalize caregiving responsibilities due to overlapping expectations from both family roles and gender norms. Kinship networks played ambivalent roles, functioning as both support systems and sources of pressure. Social stigma and the normative family ideology further contributed to the invisibility of young carers’ labor. This study highlights young caregiving as a structural issue shaped by family, gender, and emotional dynamics, and calls for policy responses grounded in these complexities.
