Abstract
This study aims to reveal that young women’s caregiving experiences in family care are a site of contestation between young adult ‘life tasks’ and gendered family care. The difficulties in achieving life tasks for young women in family care are grounded in standardized norms of young adult time. Family caregiving young adults are often portrayed as individuals who are unable to fulfill their life tasks due to caregiving responsibilities. This reproduces the previously gendered form of family caregiving in a de-gendered rhetoric, which diminishes the structural discussion of the imbalance in the distribution of care and erases the historical context of women who have traditionally taken on the responsibility of family care. Discussions of young women in family care are often framed in relation to the transition to adulthood, dichotomizing caregiving and life tasks. However, the caregiving experiences of young women in family care are better understood as an intertwining of the roles of daughter and young woman. The gendered nature of care, the normative meaning of marriage for women, and the separation of work from care have led young women in family care to develop their life prospects in individualized ways. The decision to remain unmarried or to enter the ‘young adult care track’ can be seen as a way to manage the risks associated with the lack of institutional support for sick family members. This study suggests a shift away from viewing young women in family care as ‘vulnerable youth’ who face challenges in employment, education, and welfare, and instead focuses on them as caregivers who are striving to provide sustainable care within the normative life tasks of young adulthood.
