본 연구는 코로나19 바이러스 팬데믹 상황의 장기화에 따른 노인의 삶과 죽음에 대한 변화양상을 조명해 보았다. 코로나19 감염에 대한 노인의 불안과 코로나19 확산이후 그동안 보편적으로 행해져온 상례(장례)의 소실과정을 반 게넵(Van Gennep)의 통과의례가 갖는 분리-과도-재통합의 상징적 의례구조 이론으로 해석하였다. 일반적인 상중(喪中)의 의례 과정은 망자의 시신과 육신을 떠난 영혼을 취급하는 의례이다. 망자의 임종을 통한 분리, 상주가 행하는 상례 절차의 과도적 과정, 마지막 탈상을 통해 상주의 지위에서 다시 일상적인 사회로의 복귀가 이루어진다. 임종을 맞아 치르는 애도과정, 상중 통과의례의 과도적 기간, 그리고 다시 일상으로의 복귀하는 과정은 인간의 존엄성이 유지된 좋은 죽음을 맞이하게 하는 통과의례인 것이다. 코로나19 장기화로 인해 노년기 노인의 정서적 고독과의 사투, 의료적 방역에 밀려 시신을 밀봉한 후 화장당해야만 하는 망자의 애도되지 않은 죽음, 이를 막아내지 못해 통탄하는 유가족에 대한 심리적 방역의 필요성을 논하고자 하였다. 출생이 모든 사람에게 정상적이고 보편적인 과정이듯 죽음 역시 그 과정에서 인간의 존엄성을 유지한 채 죽음의 질을 유지해야 함을 피력했다. 따라서 본 논문은 코로나19라는 특수한 상황일지라도 노년기 마지막 삶의 과정에서 망자가 편안하고 존엄한 죽음을 맞이하는 한편 유가족들에 대한 심리적 방역 필요성, 그리고 ‘인간 존엄성 회복’이라는 생명윤리의식 확립 필요성을 제시하고자 한다.
Abstract
This study is to shed light on the aspect of changes in elders’ lives and deaths as a result of the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic situation. The elders’ anxiety to Covid-19 infection and the disappearing process in funeral that has been universally performed since the Covid-19 pandemic are interpreting as a symbolic ritual structure theory of separation -transition-incorporation in the rite of passage of Van Gennep. The ritual process of in mourning generally is a rites to have dead body and soul that left body rest in peace. The chief mourner be able to return to the normal social life after through separation from deceased death, transitional funeral rites process and leave off mourning period. The mourning process of death, the transitional period of mourning and the process returning to daily life is a rite of passage to face a good death with maintaining human dignity. This study is meant to discuss the necessity of psychological prevention for the bereaved family who unable to prevent the death of the deceased who had to be cremated with mourn-less death after the struggle with elders' emotional loneliness and be left in the medical protection due to a prolonged Covid-19. It states that Just as birth is a normal and common process for everyone, death is also should be maintained the quality of death with maintaining human dignity in the process. Therefore, this paper aims to the elder ages facing a comfortable and dignified death at the process of last lives even in a special situation called Covid-19 and, meanwhile, to suggest the necessity of psychological protection against the bereaved families and the establishment of a bioethics consciousness of 'recovering human dignity.
