초고령 노인의 죽음과 함께 살아가는 삶에 대한 내러티브 탐구

본 연구는 초고령 노인의 죽음과 함께 살아가는 삶과 그 의미를 탐구하기 위해 수행되었다. 이를 위하여 배우자와 사별한 지 5년이 안 되었거나 자신이 심각한 질병 중인 80세 이상의 초고령 노인 4명을 선정하였다. 심층면접을 통한 자료수집 기간은 2020년 12월부터 2021 년 3월까지였으며 참여자 1인당 5-8회의 면담을 실시하였다. 자료의 분석은 Clandinin과Connelly(2006)가 제안한 내러티브 탐구 절차에 따라 현장에 존재하기, 현장 텍스트로 이동하기, 현장 텍스트 구성하기, 경험에 대한 의미 구성하기, 연구 텍스트 작성하기 등 다섯 단계를 적용하였으며, 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 초고령 노인의 일상 속 죽음 경험 이야기, 죽음을경험한 이후의 삶 이야기, 죽음을 준비하는 삶 이야기 등 세 개의 주제가 공통으로 도출되었다. 그리고, 참여자들의 죽음과 함께 살아가는 삶의 의미는 ‘당장 죽어도 이상하지 않은 나이’, ‘삶의 일상에서 죽음이 일깨우는 교훈’, ‘삶의 빈 곳을 채우며 온전한 삶으로 나아가다’, ‘남은 시간의 의미를 통해 삶을 완성하다’ 등 4개의 주제를 발견하였으며, 최종적으로 초고령노인의 죽음과 함께 살아가는 삶의 이야기를 통해 ‘삶의 완성으로서 죽음’이라는 의미를 도출하였다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 초고령 노인의 죽음과 함께 살아가는 삶의 이야기와 그것의 의미를 개인적 정당성, 실제적 정당성, 사회적 정당성의 맥락에서 논의하고 연구의 제한점 및 후속 연구에 대한 제언을 제시하였다.
Abstract
This study was conducted to explore the experiences and meanings of life living with death in the oldest old. To this end, four oldest old people aged 80 or older were selected who have been bereft of their spouses for less than 5 years or are seriously ill. The in-depth interview data collection was made from December 2020 to March 2021, and 5-8 interview sessions were conducted per participant. According to the narrative inquiry procedure proposed by Clandinin and Connelly(2000), the analysis of the data applied the following five steps: existing in the field, moving to field text, composition of field text, composition of meaning for experience, and composition of research text, and the results are as follow. Three themes were derived in common: a narrative of the death experience of the oldest old; a narrative of life after experiencing death; and a narrative on life preparing for death. In addition, the meaning of life living with death of the participants was derived from four themes: “age that is not strange to die immediately,” “lessons awakened by death in the daily life,” “filling the emptiness of life and moving on to a full life,” and “completing life through the meaning of remaining time.” Based on these findings, the experiences and meanings of life living with death of the oldest old people were discussed in the context of personal, practical, and social justification. The implications of the study results and counseling practice for the elderly were discussed as well as limitations of the study and follow-up research.
