역사적으로 정치와 교육 분야의 변치 않은 목표는 도덕적 공동체를 건설하는 것이라고 말해도 그리 틀린 말이 아닐 것이다. 본 연구는 시론적 차원에서 도덕적 공동체의 성격을 규명하고자 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 국가, 시장, 공동체의 관계를 규명하고 난 다음 공동체에 대한 일반적인 개념을 살펴보았다. 그리고 우리 사회의 변천에 따른 공동체의 성격과 특징이 어떻게 변천하였는지에 대해 탐색해 보았다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 하여 현대사회에서 요구되는 도덕적 공동체를 만드는 데 필요한 구성 요소가 무엇인지에 대해 세 영역으로 나누어 알아보았다. 먼저 도덕적 공동체의 구성원이 지녀야 할 덕목들로는 도덕적 공동체 규범의 민주적 결정과 자발적 이행, 공동체에의 적극적 참여 및 토론 문화 정착, 공동체에 대한 자율적 책무감 등을 꼽았다. 다음으로 도덕적 공동체의 구성원 상호간의 지녀야 덕목들로 구성원 간의 협력과 우애, 구성원간의 상호 신뢰와 의존, 인권존중에 기초한 관용, 타인에 대한 배려와 자비 등을 꼽았다. 마지막으로 도덕적 공동체의 역할과 의무로 구성원에 대한 공평한 대우 및 자아실현의 지원, 극단적 불평등의 완화와 공동선의 추구 등을 꼽았다.
Abstract
Historically, the unchangeable goal in political and educational areas is to build a moral community. This paper tries to inquire into its characteristics. In order to attain this goal, I will probe into the general conception of the community and how its characteristics are altered according to time. On the basis of this discussion, I will research what the structural elements is in order to build a moral community. They are divided into three areas. Firstly, the virtues to keep as a member of a moral community are ⓐ a democratic decision and an autonomous performance of a moral community's norms, ⓑ an active participation in a moral community and the settlement of discussion culture, and ⓒ a sense of responsibility for a moral community. Secondly, the virtues to keep between the members of a moral community are ⓐ cooperation and friendship, ⓑ the spirit of tolerance on the basis of human dignity, and ⓒ the care and mercy of others. Lastly, the duty and the role of a moral community are ⓐ an equitable treatment of the members of a moral community and the active support for self realization of the members, and ⓑ the alleviation of excessive inequality and the pursuit of the common good.
