다문화사회를 위한 인격교육의 성격과 방향

초록

본고는 오늘날 급격히 다문화사회로 변해가는 우리 사회에 필요한 인격교육의 성격과 방향에 대한 시론적 논의이다. 이를 위해 본고는 서양심리학적 이해를 바탕으로 한 성격 및 도덕교육의 관점과는 다른 새로운 인격교육의 개념화가 필요하다는 것을 강조하며, 그 근거를 다문화교육의 목적과 철학에서 모색된다. 아울러 연구자는 인격교육의 가치기준으로 공동체주의, 도덕적 상대주의, 특수성(맥락성)을 고려한 도덕적 가치준거, 그리고 도덕적 실천에 중심을 둔 인격교육을 제시하였는데, 이 가치기준을 지향함에 있어서 윤리학의 범주들과의 관련성을 참조하고, 아울러 개인적 가치와 사회적 가치 사이에서 균형을 잡을 필요가 있음을 강조하였다. 마지막으로 연구자는 다문화교육의 목표에서 추출한 다문화 인격교육의 가치 네 가지, 즉 ‘편견의 극복,’ ‘사회정의 및 평등성,’ ‘민주주의 및 시민의식,’ 그리고 ‘다문화적 이해’를 제시하였고, 이 가치들을 바탕으로 다원주의적 사고, 공동체적 사고(관계성), 다문화적 특수성의 이해, 그리고 실천지향적 다문화 인격교육을 핵심원리로 삼아야 한다는 것을 강조하였다. 본고의 논의를 출발점으로 삼아 앞으로 다문화사회의 인격교육의 방향에 대한 더욱 깊이 있는 논의를 기대한다.

Abstract

This paper discusses the nature and prospect of character education for a multicultural society. It emphasizes that the character education for a multicultural society should focus on the aims and values of multicultural education by departing from the comtemporary understandings of moral education, which have been highly relied on the traditions of modern western psychology. In this respect, this paper suggests four value-standards of character education: communitarianism, moral relativism, contextuality of moral values, and practice-oriented morality, which are considered as the major goals of multicultural education. This paper details how these value standards can be related to each sub-divisionary category of ethics, and how it is important to stay in balance between personal values and social values. The paper’s discussion may open a new avenue for the directions and ideas of moral education for multicultural era.
