아리스토텔레스 ‘시민적 우정’의 도덕교육적 함의

초록

본 연구에서는 아리스토텔레스의 ‘시민적 우정’의 의미와 도덕교육적 중요성 및 함의를 탐구하고자 하였다. 아리스토텔레스의 시민적 우정은 바람직한 시민의 성향과 태도를 핵심에 둔다는 점에서 현대 자유민주주의 정치공동체 내의 화합을 촉진하기 위한 실질적이고 의미 있는 기반을 제공하며, 따라서 도덕과 시민교육의 중요한 주제가 된다. 이때 아리스토텔레스가 말하는 우정의 완전한 형태가 가지는 지향성을 고려하였을 때, 시민적 우정에 있어서도 ‘덕에 근거한’ 시민적 우정은 관련된 논의에서 큰 중요성을 가진다. 그러나 그 현실 가능성에 대한 회의가 존재하는 만큼 본고는 ‘덕에 근거한 온건한 시민적 우정’을 도덕교육의 한 목표로 제안하였다. 이처럼 본고는 이상적 형태를 바람직한 목표로 지향하면서도 현실적인 교육적 논의를 진행해야 할 필요성을 강조하였으며, 그를 위한 초석으로 삼을 수 있는 실천 전략에 대한 논의를 진행하였다.

Abstract

This study explored the meaning of Aristotelian 'civic friendship' and its importance and implications for moral education. Aristotelian civic friendship provides a practical and meaningful foundation for promoting harmony within the modern liberal democratic political community in that it puts citizens’ desirable civic dispositions and attitudes at its core. Hence, it becomes an important theme of moral education. Given the desirability of the full-blown virtue friendship, civic friendship based on it should be considered significantly in the related discussions. As there is skepticism about its possibility of realization, however, we suggested rather ‘moderate version of civic friendship for virtue’ as a goal of moral education. To this end, we emphasized the need to conduct realistic educational discussions while aiming for the ideal form, and discussed the practical strategies which can be used as a cornerstone.
