아리스토텔레스의 시민적 친애의 의미 규명을 위한 예비적 연구

아리스토텔레스는 시민적 친애가 시민을 화합시키고 국가를 결속시키는 가장 효과적인 방법이라고 생각한다. 하지만 그의 시민적 친애에는 크게 두 가지 의문이 생긴다. 첫째, 아리스토텔레스에 의하면 친애는 그 근거에 따라 쾌락에 근거한 친애, 이익에 근거한 친애, 덕에 근거한 친애가 있다. 시민적 친애는 어떤 친애를 말하는 것인가? 둘째, 역시 아리스토텔레스에 의하면 시민에는 소수의 지배하는 시민이 있고 다수의 지배받는 시민이 있다. 시민적 친애는 어떤 시민의 친애인가? 이 두 가지 질문은 다양하게 조합될 수 있고, 그 결과 아리스토텔레스의 시민적 친애에는 더 많은 수의 의문들이 제기될 수 있음을 알 수 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 의문들에 대한 최종적인 답을 준비하기 위한 예비적 연구다. 본 논문은 먼저 플라톤의 수호자들의 공유제에 근거한 시민적 친애에 대한 아리스토텔레스의 반론을 검토하여 아리스토텔레스가 생각한 시민적 친애의 의미를 밝히는 단서를 확인한다. 그리고 그 단서들을 활용하여 덕에 근거한 친애는 시민적 친애가 아님을 논증한다. 덕에 근거한 친애는 소수의 인간들에게만 가능한 강한 친애이기 때문에 다수의 시민들 사이의 친애가 될 수 없다. 후속 연구에서는 아리스토텔레스의 시민적 친애는 이익에 근거한 약한 친애임을 적극적으로 규명할 것이다.
Abstract
Aristotle thinks that civic friendship is most effective method for citizens to be harmonized and brings solidarity to state. However, there are two questions; First, according to him, there are three kinds friendship by for what friends love each other, which are friendship for pleasure, friendship for usefulness, and friendship for virtue. Which of them is the Aristotle’s civic friendship? Second, there are two kinds of citizen, that is, the ruler and the ruled. Whose friendship is Aristotle’s civic friendship? This paper argues that Aristotle’s civic friendship is a friendship based on usefulness by process as follows; First, with examination of Aristotle’s critiques on Plato’s civic friendship on communism of guardians, this paper finds some clues for clarification of Aristotle’s civic friendship. Second, by tracing those clues this paper argues that friendship based on virtue is not Aristotle’s civic friendship. Finally, the follow up study will argue that Aristotle’s civic friendship is friendship based on usefulness by every citizens without distinction of the ruler and the ruled.
