도덕적 사유의 수준을 구분하여 행위공리주의(AU)와 규칙공리주의(RU)에 상이한 역할을 배분하는 두 수준 공리주의(TLU)는 AU와 RU의 한계를 극복하고 통찰을 보존하는 장점이 있다. 그럼에도 TLU 역시 비판적 사유 실행의 난점과 AU로의 붕괴에 따른 AU의 한계 재현의 문제에 직면한다. TLU가 직면한 난관을 돌파하기 위해서는 RU 수준과 AU 수준 이외에 갈등 해결 원리로 이루어진 중간 수준 혹은 혼합 수준이 필요하다. ‘규칙 갈등’ 및 ‘최대선(공리)과 규칙의 갈등’ 문제를 다루는 중간 수준의 원리를 도입함으로써 TLU는 AU 수준의 사유를 최소화할 수 있다. 또한 최소화된 비판적 사유도 공론화함으로써 AU의 한계 재현을 막을 수 있다. 이렇게 중간 수준의 갈등 해결 원리를 도입하고 AU를 공론화함으로써 TLU는 다 수준 결과주의로 전환한다. 이 수정된 TLU, 즉 다 수준 결과주의는 비판적 수준의 공론화 AU, 중간 수준의 갈등 해결 원리, 직관적 수준의 RU로 구성된다.
Abstract
Two-level utilitarianism (TLU), which assigns different roles to act utilitarianism (AU) and rule utilitarianism (RU) by distinguishing levels of moral thinking, has the advantage of overcoming the limitations of AU and RU and preserving their insights. However, TLU also faces the difficulty of practicing critical thinking and the problem of reproducing the limitations of AU due to its collapse into AU. To overcome these challenges, TLU requires an intermediate or hybrid level comprised of conflict resolution principles in addition to the RU and AU levels. By introducing intermediate-level principles that address the issues of "rule conflict" and "conflict between the greatest good (utility) and rules," TLU can minimize AU-level thinking. Furthermore, by publicizing this minimized critical reasoning, TLU can prevent the reproducing limitations of AU. By introducing intermediate-level conflict resolution principles and publicizing AU, TLU transforms into multi-level consequentialism. This modified TLU, or multi-level consequentialism, consists of the critical level of publicizing AU, the intermediate level of conflict resolution principles, and the intuitive level of RU.
