Abstract
Since Elizabeth Anscombe’s Intention, it is widely accepted that an agent knows his own actions without observation and inference. While this seems to be an obvious fact, there is a line of thought that challenges it. It is that since actions usually are events that go beyond the boundaries of the agent’s body, the knowledge of it necessarily has to involve empirical knowledge about the environment. In order to resolve this apparent tension, inferentialism claims that despite the appearance, self-knowledge of actions involves inference. An agent comes to know about his action by inferring from his knowledge about intention and empirical knowledge about his environments and abilities. This essay discusses pros and cons of inferentialism, and eventually rejects it.
