Abstract

What is the relationship between intentional action and intention? It is clear that intention does not guarantee the action. However, it is not so clear whether intentional action necessarily accompany with intention. There is a debate whether intention is a necessary condition for intentional action, namely ‘the simple view' problem. Some presents cases in which the consistency of intention is broken if the simple view is accepted, and argues that the simple view should be refused because the consistency of intention cannot be given up. The others argues that abandoning the simple view leads to allowing the unique role of intention to other mental states, which is an unacceptable conclusion and therefore argues that a simple view should be hold. Both sides are in a difficult situation where they have to bear a loss of the concept of intention. In this essay, I intend to solve the simple view problem by focusing on the intentional action. I will present the criteria for under what description an action can be said to be intentional. And according to this criteria, it will be revealed that even in cases presented as counterexamples, the simple view can be defended without losing consistency of intention.
