이 논문은 일차적으로 1980년대 이후 인식론에서 활발하게 벌어진 내재주의 대 외재주의 논쟁의 본성을 정확히 이해하는 것이다. 내재주의는 인식적 정당화를 결정하는 요인이 우리의 정신에 내적인 요인들에 의해 이루어진다고 주장하면서 인식적 책임과 인지적 파악가능성 개념을 토대로 하여 이 주장을 구체화한다. 반면에 외재주의는 내재주의의 이러한 주장을 부정한다. 양측의 주장을 살피다 보면 자연스럽게 인식적 정당화 개념에 두 측면, 즉 신념을 가진 사람이 그 신념에 대해 이유를 가지고 있어야 한다는 내재적 측면과 신념이 옳음이나 옳음직함과 연관이 있어야 한다는 외재적 측면이 있음이 드러난다. 따라서 필자는 정당화에 이 두 측면이 있음을 선명하게 부각시킨 다음, 내재주의 대 외재주의의 논쟁이 이 두 측면에 대한 양측의 직관이 숨은 동기로 작용하고 있음을 밝힌다. 그리고 나서 마지막으로 올스튼의 내재주의적 외재주의를 양측의 입장을 조정하려는 대안으로 소개한다.
Abstract
It is now somewhat commonplace to classify a theory of justification or knowledge as externalist or internalist. This paper aims to understand the contrast between internalism/externalism in epistemology since 1980s. Debates typically have centered on two notions: epistemic responsibility and cognitive accessibility. Internalism holds that either epistemic responsibility or cognitive accessibility, or both, are necessary for justification. Externalists tend to deny that either is necessary for justification. I begin by considering debates over epistemic responsibility and cognitive accessibility, and present some of the standard arguments concerning epistemic responsibility and cognitive accessibility. I then present features of the concept of justification and the reasons these features might be thought to motivate either internalism or externalism. Finally, I consider a theory, W. Alston's internalist externalism, that attempt to combine features of both internalism and externalism, and consider a outlook for resolution of the debate.
